Penshorn's son, Elroy, said Wednesday that he hopes the community of Marion will remember his father for his work ethic.

"He was a hard worker," said Elroy Penshorn. "He was an honest business man and did his best to do the best job on everything that we did over here."

Leroy Penshorn is best known for establishing Penshorn's Meat Market in 1972 and developing it into one of the best known businesses in Marion

"We worked a lot of hours," said Elroy Penshorn. "I started in here when I was 10. We would work all day to 6, we would go home, eat supper and come back and work to 12."

Penshorn told KSAT said building the business took a lot of work and so did building the business back up after arsonists nearly destroyed it three years ago.

Longtime friend of Leroy Penshorn, Roger Scheffel, who went into business next door at Helping Hand Hardware said he admired Leroy for rebuilding the meat market.

"He rebuilt that meat market after the fire and that fire almost destroyed the thing, approximately 75 percent of it."

Leroy Penshorn had just retired almost 2 years ago and his two sons have taken over the family business.
