Consumer Reports tests elliptical exercisers

Top-rated machine runs $3100

Consumer Reports tested more than a dozen elliptical machines designed for home use to help those with New Year's resolve to exercise get off on the right foot.

Ellipticals imitate the motion of running without the hard impact, maknig them popular choices.

Machines tested cost between $800 and $3100.

Testers checked how much force is needed on the pedals are various resistance levels. They also checked for structural integrity.

The $2200 Endurance E400 rated lowest of those tested.

Top ratings went to the $3100 Octane Fitness Q37ci.

For less money, $1800, the Vision X30 Premier came in second.

No matter which machine a consumer buys,  Consumer Reports advised trying it out in person first.
