LEAKEY, Texas – A Leakey woman died Tuesday at University Hospital after being accidentally shot in her home Saturday afternoon.
The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office identified the woman as 29-year-old Crystal Whetzel.
Michael Rushing, a family friend, said Whetzel's two sons were playing with a handgun inside the home, and when Whetzel tried to take it away from them, the gun went off.
Whetzel was taken by helicopter to University Hospital and placed on life support until her husband could fly home from Afghanistan, where he was working as a contractor, Rushing said.
A memorial service for Whetzel will be held in Leakey Thursday morning at 10 a.m.
