SEGUIN, Texas – After Monday's arrest of Guadalupe County Judge Michael Wiggins on possession of marijuana, many in Guadalupe County and Seguin are shocked.
"It just really kind of shocked us," said Seguin business owner Jerry Griner.
Throughout downtown Seguin, shock continues set in after the arrest of Wiggins, who was arrested Monday on charges of possession of marijuana in Brazos County.
The incident has left many in the town talking.
"All day people here have been talking about it; with different opinions and stuff. Like, when he goes to jail, and who he might see that he put there," said Michael Fletcher, an employee at a downtown salon in Seguin.
Some also shared frustration about the news.
"That's just really ridiculous to me," said Texas Lutheran student Kelsey Yoemans.
Yoemans believed the judge, who in addition to his administrative duties, also occasionally magistrates criminal defendants, was a hypocrite.
"A couple of people from high school were saying, you know, that when they went to court over any marijuana possessions, he never went easy on them," she said.
Wiggins was not available for comment today but did release this statement to the media:
"At this time, I am working resolve the issues in Brazos County. Upon completion, I will provide a full public disclosure of the events that have transpired."
Meanwhile, few discounted Wiggins work as county judge.
"He's done a fine job; he's done a great job," added Griner.
As for whether or not he should resign, that too drew mixed reviews, with many waiting to reserve judgment until all the facts were released.
