San Antonio adoption agency shuts down

Adoption Covenant helps families left in limbo

A San Antonio adoption agency shut its doors, leaving many families who were awaiting an adoption in limbo.

But an outpouring of support from other agencies across Texas is helping the families get back on track.

Adoption Associates of San Antonio on Prue Road abruptly closed its doors last week.

"I haven't been able to find out very much information. We were contacted by some families who had been dealing with the agency, and they didn't have any information. Told that they just got an email that said, 'We're not in business,'" said Merinda Condra.

Condra works for Adoption Covenant, an agency based out of Lubbock. It is now helping the families who were dealing with Adoption Associates of San Antonio.

"It's shocking. It really is. I would expect an agency to do some sort of phase out, to maybe work with another agency to do take over the cases, something to provide an ease of transition for the families," said Condra.

Because the adoption process is complicated and expensive, Condra said the families she has spoken to are desperate for answers.

"Terrified that they would have to start over from scratch with a whole new set of adoption fees. That they wouldn't be able to afford it. That they wouldn't be able to bring their babies home.  Just panic and fear and tears," said Condra.

Condra said some of the families had paid adoption fees up front, and for many of them, the cost was thousands of dollars.

She recommended paying adoption agencies in increments to avoid losing your money.
