A controversial documentary that exposes bullying and focuses on real families coping with this epidemic is making its Alamo City debut.
The documentary called "Bully" is only playing at one theater in San Antonio -- the Santikos Palladium at the Rim.
As of noon, the theater had not seen a good turnout but Palladium managers said Fridays are typically slow during the day.
But they do expect the documentary to bring in a crowd.
"Bully" is the work of film maker Lee Hirsch, who followed five families dealing with bullying in some capacity beginning in 2009. Hirsch's goal was to expose the cruelty and pervasiveness of bullying in schools today.
Officals with Santikos say the decision to show it in San Antonio was not necessarily about profits.
"We fought really hard to get it and we thought it was really important to bring to San Antonio," said Santikos' Alexis Smith. "Bullying is ... an epidemic that's been in our schools for a very, very long time, but it's just now starting to become a topic of conversation where people are paying attention."
The movie is one hour and 34 minutes long. Tickets are $7.
It was rated R but has been lowered to PG-13, despite pervasive profanity.
