Police make arrest in cold case murder

Anthony Paniagua, 34, charged with murder

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police have made an arrest in connection with a cold case murder, a shooting that happened at Northwest Side gas station more than a decade ago.

An arrest affidavit stated Anthony Paniagua, 34, is charged with murder in connection with a fatal shooting at the Tetco-Chevron station in February 1999.

"I honestly don't think he even stood a fighting chance," said his mother, Margaret Arriaga, speaking back in 1999.

The affidavit said Mark Guadarrama, 20, was shot in the head after he accidentally blocked a truck in the parking lot as he attempted to drive out.

According to the affidavit, an anonymous tipster called police soon after the shooting, saying Paniagua had told him details of the crime.

It also stated that right after the shooting, officers stopped a truck in which Paniagua was a passenger because it matched the description of the getaway car.

"We always told Mark to turn the other way when there was trouble, and it looked like he was, because he was shot while driving away," said Arriaga.

However, neither of those resulted in his arrest. The affidavit stated police let Paniagua go because they did not find a weapon in the truck.

In 2010, detectives tracked down the tipster and interviewed him again, as well as a man who said he was in the truck with Paniagua at the time of the shooting, the affidavit stated.

The information they obtained from those witnesses led to Paniagua's arrest, the affidavit stated.

He was booked into the Bexar County jail Wednesday with bond set at $250,000.
