Experts say it could happen to certain types of wild grass, especially in drought conditions. However, Tifton 85 is supposed to be safe.
"This pasture has been here 15 years. We have grazed cattle and horses on it, and cut and baled hay on it all this time," said Jerry Abel, Cattle rancher.
Agriculture experts say the strain of grass may have mutated in the wild because there is no sign of genetic modification. The is the first reported case of Tifton 85 poisoning livestock.
