SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio police officer is finally back home recovering after he was hit by a truck.
"I'm just glad that I'm alive," said Officer Jonathan Esquivel. "That I'm here."
The accident happened on Feb. 19.
Esquivel was on patrol, assisting another officer at an accident when he was crushed by a pickup truck.
"They explained to me and showed me X-rays of my injuries," said Esquivel. "I realize that they say that I shouldn't be here right now. I shouldn't be having a conversation with them now."
Esquivel woke up two months later with no recollection of the accident.
And although Esquivel suffers from a shattered pelvis, broken bones and has undergone 10 surgeries, he said the toughest part for him was being away from his two boys.
"The very first day they brought them in, I was crying," he said. "And I didn't stop crying until they left. It was a heart-felt moment. I missed them the most."
However, after spending the last four months at a rehab facility, the six-year veteran officer is now back home with his family.
"They're just glad to have him back," said Marissa Esquivel, Esquivel's wife. "And do the sports thing and play baseball, just being a family again 'cause they are used to having both their parents home and with him being gone, it was hard."
While Esquivel is barely walking and his doctors don't have a clear timeline of when he will recover, he said he is ready to get back on patrol.
"I want to be a police officer again," he said. "I love it. I love it."
