Alamo Fireworks offers safe zone

Customers can light fireworks in safe zone off I-10 near Ralph Fair Road

SAN ANTONIO – Alamo Fireworks at 26294 Interstate 10 West is offering a safe zone for lighting fireworks this Fourth of July.

While Bexar County has designated some fireworks superstores as safe zones in the past, there were no such designations this holiday.

Luke Girdley, VP of Alamo Fireworks, said the company decided to offer a location for customers.

"Alamo Fireworks is interested in having people be safe and going out and enjoy the holidays in a safe way and this is one of the ways we provide that to the public," said Girdley, adding that he and other fireworks vendors hope to work with the county to continue their efforts.

The site on a few back acres off IH-10 had several families enjoying larger fireworks that may not be safe on other areas because of the dry conditions.

"I came out here to buy some fireworks to blow some stuff up. I'm here with my brothers and we're having a good time," said Nicholas McKay, who was visiting the area with his family from Boston. "We're just trying to have a good time and enjoy ourselves and we're really taking advantage of me buying fireworks out here because we can't buy them at home."

The Leon Springs Volunteer Fire Department had a truck on site and some firefighters did put out a small fire in the dry grass but there were no major issues Tuesday night. Alamo Fireworks expects a large crowd for July 4.

"It's going to be crazy out here," said Girdley.  "It's going to be like a rock concert there's going to be so many people out here."
