Suspects arrested after shootout with Poteet police chief

Gunfire exchanged after traffic stop

POTEET, Texas – At least two people have been arrested after exchanging gunfire in a residential area with Poteet's police chief.

Chief Martin Chavez said he's under legal advice not to talk about the incident.

However, Sgt. Luis Farias, the police department's spokesman, was able to offer details about incident which happened around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Farias said Chavez tried to initiate a traffic stop on a pickup after its driver ran a stop sign near 7th and L streets.

He said as Chavez approached the vehicle, the driver tried to hit him and sped off. Chavez pulled out his service revolver and fired, Farias said.

A passenger in the truck then pulled out a gun and shot back, Farias said. No one was hit by any of the gunfire.

Farias said as the suspects drove off, they tossed methamphetamines, cocaine and marijuana from the truck.

They bailed out of the truck about two blocks away and ran into an abandoned home where they attempted to hide, he said.

A police department canine was sent in and bit the driver on the shoulder.

Robert Escamilla and Michael Coronado, both from Poteet, were arrested in connection with the shooting. Their exact ages were not available.

Police also arrested as many as three other people at the scene on other charges.
