SAN ANTONIO – Last month, Montgomery County Animal Control seized nearly 300 dogs living in deplorable conditions at the Spindletop Refuge located outside Houston in Willis, Texas.
Rhonda Gueringer, who runs the Ordinary Miracles Canine Rescue in San Antonio, said she took a pit bull she rescued to Spindletop last year, in hopes of finding it a good home.

"Spindletop was referred to us by several different rescue groups, and individuals who were familiar with them," said Gueringer. "We did our research, and found out that they were a great rescue."
Gueringer paid the shelter's $750 program fee and kept in contact with the owner, who told her that after two and a half months, the dog had been successfully rehabilitated and adopted out.
Over the course of the next year, Gueringer took four additional dogs to the shelter, each time, paying the $750 fee. It's a decision she says she now regrets.
"The day that it (the raid) happened, it came out on Facebook of all places," said Gueringer. "298 dogs were there in crates and were seized by county officials."
Montgomery County Animal Control raided Spindletop after reports that the dogs were being kept in crates for days at a time, some allegedly, even dying from the heat.
Gueringer now has each of the dogs back, as do other rescue groups who also took dogs there and says her focus remains the same. "That's what we're trying to do right now," said Gueringer. "Once again, try to find good places for these dogs."
Gueringer said she hopes criminal charges are brought against the owner of Spindletop.
