Several people were taken to the hospital on Wednesday afternoon after the escalators at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center malfunctioned.
Michael Sawaya, director of convention and sports facilities, said one of the escalators inside the convention center just stopped, causing several people to fall down.
The incident occurred during a Game Stop Convention that was being held there.
Fire officials said three of the people who fell were treated by some medical staff on site.
Seven people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, like bumps, cuts and bruises and one person refused to be transported.
"All the inspections were up to date," said Sawaya. "We just don't know why it shut off. That's what they're looking into. They'll do a full investigation."
The escalator will remain shut down until crews can figure out why it malfunctioned, he said.
