SA Mayor Julian Castro, wife, daughter in national spotlight at Democratic National Convention

Erica Castro, daughter Karina Victoria highlighted during speech

SAN ANTONIO – Many San Antonians were beaming with pride watching Mayor Julian Castro deliver the keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention Tuesday night in Charlotte, N.C.

Some of those were also proud to see his wife, Erica, and daughter, Karina Victoria, in the national spotlight.

"I was very proud for our city to see the mayor on national TV," said Michele Gray, a reading specialist at Ward Elementary, where Erica Castro is a math specialist. "Then to see my co-worker was like the icing on the cake."

Erica Castro was in the arena during the speech while her friends and fellow teachers were back home enjoying the moment.

"I was just so proud of her having this opportunity in a moment in history," said Laura Lara, the school's librarian.

"I could see just how happy she was (and) how proud she was and he really did an awesome job" said Vicky Lambert,a second-grade teacher.

While the mayor was gaining national attention, it is something Erica doesn't really seek out at school.

"I think she would rather be known for her competence and her care for the children than for her position as the mayor's wife," Lara said.

There were several memorable lines in the speech, but one thing many viewers will remember is watching the 3-year-old Karina Victoria flipping her hair during her father's speech.
