San Antonio police: Matthew Mays, 20, charged with abusing newborn son

San Antonio police: Matthew Mays' newborn son suffered skull fracture, broken legs

SAN ANTONIO – Matthew Mays, 20, a Northwest Side resident, is accused of abusing his newborn son and causing critical injuries to the baby, including a fractured skull and two broken legs, San Antonio police said.

San Antonio police arrested Mays Monday on a charge of injury to a child. He was booked into the Bexar County jail with bond set at $75,000.

An arrest warrant affidavit stated that the mother of the infant, who will be 2-months-old next week, rushed the injured baby to the hospital Sept. 13.

The affidavit stated that during questioning, both she and the babysitter indicated that Mays was the only person with custody of the newborn when he was hurt.

San Antonio police said Mays refused to answer questions from detectives, stating that his attorney had advised him not to do so.

However, San Antonio police said he had told a few different stories to the baby's mother, including that the baby had fallen off a bed, and that he dropped the child on the kitchen floor when he was fixing a bottle.

The arrest affidavit stated that doctors told investigators the injuries did not appear to be the result of any type of fall, but are more consistent with abuse.
