SAN ANTONIO – The rain in San Antonio and its surrounding areas got so bad Friday night that football was called off in some communities, but the players hit the turf as planned at the San Antonio Independent School District complex.
Although the wet field made for a challenging game, there was plenty of spirit there as the Sam Houston Hurricanes battled it out with the Navarro Panthers.
"That's exciting," said Rosemary Guerrero, a parent of a Sam Houston Varsity football player. "I like it when they fall, when they get the ball and just run. I like that. That's cool."
Rainy and wet, the game went on Friday, but very cautiously. Throughout the entire game, administrators kept a close eye on the field and the weather.
"We're watching the weather real close on the computer and we have a lightning meter that we use," said Denny Peel with SAISD Athletics. "Anytime the lightning comes from three to eight miles, it will set an alarm and then, that's when we go in."
The game did get called off temporarily at 8 p.m. after SAISD staff received a warning on the lightning meter.
Faithful fans waited about 30 minutes until they were cleared to come back out and cheer on their favorite players.
Guerrero said she is very proud of her son Moses.
"Just to see him," she said. "It is just very exciting. We never miss a game. We never do. We go to all his games."
Although the Sam Houston Varsity Football team was in full force on Friday, the school's band and pep squad did not attend the game.
Peel said the groups were told not to come to the game as a safety precaution.
