Family hopes to end 4-year search for killer; $5,000 offered in 2008 murder

Robert Barrientes, 46, beaten to death

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Police Department is asking for the public's help in solving the murder of 46-year-old Robert Barrientes.

Barrientes was found beaten to death behind a south side bar on April 27, 2008.

Crime Stoppers is offering $5,000 for information leading to an arrest or indictment of the person or people responsible.

Veronica Zamudio remembers her uncle's last days as painful, suffering from cancer and cirrhosis. She knew they didn't have much time left with him but never imagined to say goodbye like this.

"He had a hard life towards the end for somebody to take him out even harder," said Zamudio.

"My dad was a fighter but unfortunately his last minutes he couldn't fight," added Robert Barrientes, Jr., his son.

Police found Robert Barrientes behind Terry's Friendly Spot Bar at 755 Steve avenue in 2008. His badly beaten body was found under a cardboard box.

"You don't want that person walking the streets because if he did it to a sick man, who's to say he won't do it again," said Zamudio.

Veronica used to come back to the bar quite a bit to play detective by herself. But she stopped doing that along with leaving flowers for her uncle. She said oftentimes those flowers would be destroyed almost as soon as she left them.

The leads have been few and far between. His children pray that morals and the lure of Crime Stoppers cash will bring new information to light.

"There's more than a couple of stories that I've personally heard myself and there's people here that night that saw what happened," said Robert.

If you have any information, you can call Crime Stoppers at 224-STOP (7867).
