SAN ANTONIO – Police are searching for the driver of a silver Ford pick-up following a hit and run accident that killed a man on the city's northeast side.
The driver was pulling out of the HEB at Walzem and Montgomery at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, and attempted to head south on Walzem towards Eisenhauer when the truck struck a man crossing the street, according to police.
Police did not identify the man, who died at the scene, only saying that he was believed to be a homeless man in his 60s.
Witness Joel Ybarra said he heard the accident and saw someone in the truck get out.
"He did stop, he just didn't help him and I think the reason why he didn't help him was because he saw that the guy was homeless," said Ybarra. "I'm pretty sure if it had been a woman or kid, the guy would have stayed."
Ybarra recognized the man as a homeless man who lived nearby and said he had given the man change on multiple occasions. Police looked at footage from a security camera in the HEB parking lot but it did not appear to provide more information.
Sgt. William Rohn said witnesses did provide a partial license plate of "Y68" and they are currently searching for the vehicle.
