SAN ANTONIO – David Lee Garcia, a 25-year-old West side resident with a long criminal history, is accused of attacking and severely beating Jose Medrano, 58, and his son, Joseph, 27, with a baseball bat.
Jose Medrano later died from his injuries.
Garcia was arrested on charges of murder and aggravated assault after 5 p.m. Wednesday, shortly after the brutal beatings at Medrano's Transmissions in the 2000 block of Castroville Road.
A younger son, Chris Medrano, said his father and brother were beaten in the head with a baseball bat, leaving a pool of blood in the shop's parking lot. He said his brother was injured but has been released from the hospital.
"It's senseless. I don't even know what the point was," Chris Medrano said.
However, he said he does have an idea about what triggered the violence.
Chris Medrano said he and the suspect had an ongoing dispute over a woman, and that his brother and father were not involved.
He said Garcia had stopped by the shop earlier in the day to threaten him.
"So I went to go get a gun or something, some friends. And while I'm over there telling them, explaining to them, my brother calls me and tells me they're attacking them over here," he said.
"My ex comes over here and she visits me," Medrano said. "Her ex-boyfriend is the one that came and did this. But I don't really know why he did it."
San Antonio police, so far, have not released any information on the incident, other than the suspect's name and the charges he faces.
Records show Garcia was booked into the Bexar County jail early Thursday morning. He's being held on bonds totaling $350,000.
