SAN ANTONIO – Maggie McCombs had a bright smile on a windy Thursday afternoon, as she prepared to receive quite the Christmas gift.
The 21 year-old was shot five times back in January by an alleged stalker. She was paralyzed from the neck down.
Her boyfriend, Juan Escamilla, was also shot but did not survive the attack.
McCombs called the last year extremely difficult and unexpected, and said one of her biggest issues has been getting around.
"It takes at least two people to get me in and out of the car, and 15 or 20 minutes to transfer," McCombs said.
That issue was erased Thursday, however, thanks to a specially outfitted van donated to the McCombs family from the Gordon Hartman Family Foundation.
"I don't ever remember receiving a Christmas gift like this," said Michael McCombs, Maggie's father.
Maggie can easily get into and out the van, with remote doors and a ramp that extends to street level automatically.
"It's going to allow her to be a little more like a 21 year old again," Michael McCombs said.
