Teen gunned down, Franco Xavier Summers, 21, arrested in fatal shooting in west San Antonio

Police believe ongoing dispute led to shooting on Alexa Place; Victim ID'ed as Roger Rodriguez, other wounded teen ID'ed as Jesus Garcia

Franco Xavier Summers, 21, will be charged with murder and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in connection with a fatal shooting on the West Side Wednesday afternoon, San Antonio police say.

Roger Rodriguez Jr., 17, was pronounced dead after police said he was shot multiple times in the chest. Jesus Garcia Jr., 19, was taken to University Hospital in critical condition after he was shot as well.

The shooting happened around 3:30 p.m. in the 9800 block of Alexa Place. Police said the men got into an argument over Rodriguez's sister, who Summers was dating.

Witnesses said they heard four to five gunshots just a few minutes after the argument. Two witnesses tried to resuscitate Rodriguez Jr. while they waited for paramedics to arrive.

A witness, who did not want to be identified, said Summers approached Rodriguez's mother claiming he shot the teen in self-defense.

"He saw that the mother was there crying and yelling and he came over there trying to say, ‘I didn't do it on purpose. They pulled out the gun and a knife and I shot,'" the witness said.

Police said evidence from the scene and witness statements refute the man's claim of self-defense.

"What our suspect was telling detectives did not jive with what they found at the scene," said SAPD spokesman Officer Matthew Porter.

A knife was collected at the scene. Police said they've responded to calls in the area in the past involving Rodriguez Jr. and Summers.
