Bexar County Sheriff's Office graduates 21 from cadet class

Class expected to help fill vacancies at county jail

There will be 21 new detention officers reporting for duty Friday morning at the Bexar County Jail after their class graduated Thursday afternoon at the Bexar County Justice Center.

Family and friends of the newly minted officers sat and listened as Sheriff Susan Pamerleau addressed the crowd.

"You all have to be accountable, both in your personal and professional lives, because now, you represent Bexar County," said Pamerleau.

The class is expected to help alleviate what has become a glaring problem at the jail -- more than 50 positions there remain vacant.

That has forced existing officers to work mandatory overtime for nearly two years.

Pamerleau has pledged to fix the problem, and said that this class is an important first step in that process.
