Employee accused of stealing from San Antonio area pawn shop

Police: Betty Ann Martinez obtained bogus loans, stole from safe

Betty Ann Martinez, a pawn shop employee, is accused of stealing more than $21,000 from the north San Antonio business through bogus loans and thefts from the store safe. Martinez, 30, was arrested on a theft charge Monday.

A loss prevention employee from EZ Pawn contacted Castle Hills police last Wednesday about some money missing from the business in the 7100 block of Blanco Road, an arrest warrant affidavit stated.

Police said they later obtained a written confession from Martinez, admitting that she took the money, mostly in the form of bogus loans that she obtained by putting friends' names on the pawn shop receipts, the affidavit stated.

Investigators said in some cases, jewelry that wasn't real gold had been used as collateral, the affidavit stated.

Martinez also told police she had taken some of the money from the store safe and used it to keep the loans current, the affidavit stated. In all, police said, she stole more than $21,000.
