SAN ANTONIO – Northside Independent School District officials confirmed Tuesday that one of their female students was the target of a failed abduction last week at Anson Jones Middle School.
A letter sent home to parents said the girl walked outside around 4:45 p.m. and was approached by a man who asked her to get into his car.
She refused and ran away, immediately telling school district officials about the incident.
"She did exactly what we tell our children to do in that situation," said Pascual Gonzalez, NISD spokesman, adding that his district takes all such incidents seriously.
The suspect was described to police as an African American man between the ages of 20 and 30, wearing a red shirt and driving an old, dirty car.
KSAT searched the Texas Department of Public Safety's Sex Offender Registry online and found that nearly three dozen registered offenders live within one square mile of Anson Jones Middle School.
Six other schools are also found in that square mile.
"Whether we like it or not, the law currently allows these people to live in close proximity to schools," said Gonzales.
That, he said, makes the partnership between parents and schools even more important when it comes to children's safety.
"Talk to your kids constantly about not talking to anyone they don't know, always walking in groups, and reporting any incidents that might arise," Gonzalez said.
