SAN ANTONIO – Wilson County judge Marvin Quinney issued an evacuation order for residents living along the San Antonio River Saturday. That order includes the areas of Elmendorf and Floresville.
The river is expected to crest around 60 feet between 3:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. Sunday morning.
Most residents in Saspamco near the river opted to take their chances as the San Antonio river nearby continued to rise.
The Red Cross opened a shelter for evacuees in the Floresville Middle School.
But Tricia Olson, incident commander said no one, as of late Saturday night, was leaving.
"It is not a mandatory evacuation order but we are strongly urging the people here to leave," Olson said.
Among those choosing to stay is 82 year old Lambertha Merrill.
"I was here in '82 and it came as far as my door," she said. "But I am trusting in God and staying."
A press release said "this is a life threatening situation and should not be taken lightly or as a wait and see attitude. If you are in the area of the San Antonio River and have been flooded before, you will flood again."
