SAN ANTONIO – Investigators are searching for the person or persons responsible for the fatal shooting of Rolando Ponce, 40, who was killed around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday at 1422 Hicks Avenue.
Ponce was shot multiple times in the upper body from close range as he stood outside the home.
"Supposedly, he was outside waiting for some contractors to show up," said SAPD Chief William McManus.
No one witnessed the shooting, but McManus says investigators believe the address was intentionally targeted.
"Don't believe it was random, by any stretch of the imagination," he said. "This was someone who we believe knew the victim."
McManus adds that police have leads they are following.
Meanwhile, someone carried out a drive-by shooting on Hicks Avenue two months ago, but no one was hit.
Then, in January, 23-year-old Roland Ponce was arrested for shooting a man four times at the door of the same house.
The younger Ponce says he acted in self defense.
SAPD said Tuesday afternoon that the relationship between Rolando Ponce and Roland Ponce is unclear.
As police work to make an arrest, McManus assured neighbors at the scene they should not be fearful because this was not a random shooting.
But one neighbor we spoke to, who did not want to be identified, says she is still uneasy.
"They might get the wrong house. I might be walking down the street. That doesn't matter," she said. "Something could go wrong if they see someone else."
"This is a good neighborhood, a safe neighborhood," said McManus. "Unfortunately, something like this can happen anywhere."
