Woman charged with child abandonment after 5 young children left alone in motel room

9-month old baby hospitalized due to neglect

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police discovered five young children left alone at a Motel Six room on Wurzbach near I-10 after a 911 hang-up.

Elizabeth Ruth Medina, 29, was arrested and charged with child endangerment for leaving them there, police said.

Officers knocked on the door of the motel room around 1:15 a.m. on Wednesday, and a child answered the door.

There were two little boys, ages 5 and 6, and three little girls, ages 3 and 2, and a 9-month-old girl.

Officers asked one of the children where their mother and father were, and she said her mother had left to pick up someone.

Police did not say how long the children had been left alone.

One of the kids told police the children had lice, and during the investigation, a detective was informed that the children had scabies.

The 9-month-old was admitted to a hospital due to neglect, and was being monitored until her health improves.

Police contacted Child Protective Services and the children were taken to a children's shelter.

While police were still at the motel, Medina pulled into the parking lot, and was arrested there.
