Blenders put to smoothie, pina colada test

Consumer Reports names Calphalon model a 'Don't Buy: Safety Risk'

Just in time for the dog days of summer, Consumer Reports put pro-style blenders to the test, whipping up smoothies and pina coladas.

While some crushed it in the ice test, the Calphalon XL 9-speed had serious problems. With three different machines, a piece of the blade broke off. As as result, Consumer Reports warns not to buy the model.

The company said it will investigate, according to Consumer Reports.

Tests included several brands including pricier models from  Vitamix and  L-Equip, as well as more affordable ones from KitchenAid and Ninja.

In the end, the $400 Vitamix aced the tests.  But, so did the $60 Ninja Master Prep Professional.
