On Monday, volunteers delivered a special holiday feast to homes of  Meals on Wheels Recipients, courtesy of HEB.

Along with a daily hot meal, recipients received a frozen Christmas meal that consisted of turkey and dressing, mashed potatoes, green beans, applesauce, a dinner roll and milk.

It also included a Christmas card, handmade by area elementary school students.

The dinners coincide with the 21st-annual HEB Feast of Sharing, which served more than 17,00 guests at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center on Saturday.

"It just means so much," said recipient Martha Zapata.

Since having knee-replacement surgery, Zapata hadn't been able to stand at the stove and cook, so Christian Senior Services and Meals on Wheels helped fill an important need in her life.

Every day, the nonprofit delivers hot meals to her home.

The service helps more than 3,500 home-bound seniors daily.

"A lot of times, the volunteer with Christian Senior Services or the employee that visits them with their meal is the only face that they'll see throughout the day, so they really look forward to getting their meal and it's more than just the nutritional feast, it's really about the companionship and seeing a friendly face every day," said HEB spokeswoman Lacey Kotzur.

While some recipients will be spending Christmas with their families, others will be alone.

Kotzur said the delivery is a gesture that helps ensure those that are home-bound aren't forgotten over the Holidays.
