Driver killed in fiery FedEx truck crash identified

SAPD: Brandon Joseph Biagas seen swerving before fiery crash on Loop 410

A driver who was killed in a fiery crash on Loop 410 near Interstate 10 Wednesday morning has been identified as Brandon Joseph Biagas, 39, of Pflugerville.

San Antonio police said he was a contractor driving for FedEx at the time.

Police said they found Biagas' body inside the cab of his 18-wheeler around 4 a.m. after it erupted into flames on Loop 410 West beneath the I-10 overpass.

"There was an officer who was close by and responded, and he was able to see flames shooting from the highway up to the upper level," said Officer Roger Zuniga, spokesman for SAPD.

Zuniga said the exact cause of the crash is still under investigation.

However, an officer at the scene said early on that a witness reported that it appeared the driver was falling asleep.

"He noticed the vehicle was kind of swerving on the roadway," Zuniga said. "It left the roadway and ran into the pillar and it exploded."

The fire blackened the highway's traffic lanes and the bottom of the overpass.

A crew with the Texas Department of Transportation arrived to assess the damage and assist with the clean-up.

The westbound highway's main lanes remained closed to traffic for more than seven hours after the crash happened.

Shortly before 11:30 a.m., police announced that the roadway had reopened.
