Bexar County residents warned against jury duty scam

Caller asks for money, threatens arrest

The Central Jury Office is warning Bexar County residents of a fraudulent scam concerning jury duty.

According to the Central Jury Office, several county residents have reported receiving calls claiming they missed jury duty, therefore have an outstanding warrant for their arrest.

The callers, who have targeted citizens who have and have not actually been summoned to jury duty, inform the resident they must pay anywhere from $2,000-$4,000 in fines or they will be picked up by a sheriff under the warrant.

The caller is then instructed to buy a Green Dotted Money Pak - a reloadable, prepaid debit card - or money orders from Walmart.

The scammer also mentions a specific name and place.

"Several of the callers have been told that its Lt. Foster and to go to Court 4C," said Julieta Schulze, Bexar County chief central jury bailiff. "We don't know what 4C is because we don't have 4C here."

The county is also unaware of a Lt. Foster.

The Central Jury Office reminds Bexar County residents that they do not contact the public by phone if they have failed to appear for jury duty. Only a letter is mailed out to those who have failed to show for jury duty.

Anyone who has been contacted under the scam or anyone with any questions should call the Central Jury Office at 210-335-2667.

Residents are also urged to call the San Antonio Police Department's non-emergency number to file a report at 210-207-7273.

The Bexar County District Attorney's office is also investigating.

"We don't want people to get intimidated, to feel that something horrible is going to happen to them," said Schulze.
