Actress Diane Keaton helps local Planned Parenthood celebrate 75th anniversary

Anti-abortion groups hold pro-life rally outside event

Planned Parenthood South Texas celebrated its 75th anniversary Monday with a fundraising luncheon at the Marriot Rivercenter.

Academy Award-winning actress Diane Keaton headlined the event and gave the keynote address.

Keaton shared the personal story of starting her own family.

Event sponsor and Planned Parenthood South Texas board member Pat Jasso said Keaton's story illustrates what Planned Parenthood is all about.

"We're about family. We're about kids being born wanted, planned," Jasso said. "(Keaton) had her kids when she was ready for them, and that's what we're about. We're there to help families when they're ready to be prepared."

Outside the event dozens of anti-abortion protestors held a pro-life rally.

Mike Knuffke of the San Antonio Family Association said Keaton's presence at the event conflicts with the traditional family values she explored in her films.

He called Planned Parenthood an "abortuary" and said it does not offer any services helpful to women.

"They either dispense pills or they kill babies. We don't need it. They should go out of business immediately," Knuffke said.

"They're not doing what they say they're doing, and they're not doing it (out of) safety (for) the patient," said Angela Notzon. "I'm trying to help our community in San Antonio and the surrounding area realize that our sisters in Christ need help with their problems of being pregnant."

Planned Parenthood officials said the protestors are seriously misinformed.

"Our No. 1 issue is prevention of cervical and breast cancer, family planning, prevention of unintended pregnancies, STDs, well women exams and making sure that women, men, and teens are cared for," said Planned Parenthood South Texas Communications Director Mara Posada. "The vast majority of our services have nothing to do with abortion, but we are here for women that need that service and we make no apologies for it."

More than 1,300 people attended the event.

Posada said proceeds from the fundraiser will only go to preventative services at Planned Parenthood.

She said none of the money raised will be used for abortion services or political activities.
