South San Antonio has seen unprecedented economic growth in the past few years and it continues Tuesday.
This time, the growth has nothing to do with the Eagle Ford Shale, but instead a very popular food brand you can find in just about any grocery store.
Ramen noodles, produced by Maruchan Inc., is incredibly popular and now the company has a new home in South Bexar County.
Maruchan is North America's largest maker of ramen noodles and associated products and its biggest consumer in the United States is Texas. Mexico is also a huge consumer of the product, making its location in San Antonio ideal.
The company's new 51,000-square-foot plant is located off Fisher Road, near the Interstate 35 and Loop 410 interchange. It will open with 200 employees, but plans to bump that up to 600 employees in time.
The South Side plant will be the fourth U.S.-based factory for Maruchan, which is based in Irvine, Calif. Eventually, the plant plans to crank out an estimated 1.8 million packages of food a day.
