A small plane crashed near Stinson Airport Saturday afternoon, coming down dangerously close to kids' baseball games.
It happened around 2 p.m., just off of South Flores, near Roosevelt.
Sergeant Trey Roussel with the San Antonio Police Department said it appears that the pilot was coming in for a landing at Stinson Airport when the engine on the plane lost power and the pilot was forced to land, just 40 feet away from the baseball fields.
"The plane made a couple of divots in the gravel, spun quickly to the left and hit a fence," said Roussel. "It stopped almost immediately."
Wade Cherry, a coach for one of the little league baseball teams out on the field, said they were shocked to see a plane headed their way.
"It was in the air, coming down sideways," said Cherry. "Parents were yelling, 'Watch out!' to the kids. We looked and watched the plane come down sideways and land in the parking lot where there were no vehicles."
"I heard some kind of motor running and I looked at the coach and they were like, 'Look out!'" said Jordan Plair, a little league baseball player. "I turned around. It was 50 feet in the air and I just saw it crash."
The small plane did crash, but in the parking lot of the little league complex, away from the fields and the players.
"The pilot did an excellent job in getting the plane down without injuring the kids playing football and baseball," said Roussel.
Roussel said the kids were shaken up, but no one was hurt.
"I was scared," said Andrew Beltran, a little league baseball player. "I was thinking it was going to hit me."
Roussel said the pilot is OK and that he was alert and talking, but was taken to a hospital to get checked out for back pain.
The NTSB will investigate the cause of the accident .
