KSAT tours Cascade Caverns near Boerne

Cascade Caverns oldest, wettest cave attraction in Texas

Just outside of Boerne, lies a camper's dream. Just bring a tent or an RV and explore hundreds of acres of trails and enjoy the sounds of nature. Just make sure you do not miss out on the real hidden gem right under your feet.

Beneath the area is the oldest and wettest cave attraction in Texas.

Jeremy Collins in the general manager at Cascade Caverns and gives multiple tours of the cave each day. He explained what it meant to be the wettest show cave in Texas.

"When I say wettest, it's the most active. So there are stalactites and stalagmites constantly forming around," Collins said.

A lot of wildlife lives on the acreage surrounding the caverns and inside the cave, you'll see bats and frogs and what is known as the Cascade Cavern Salamander.

Collins said the salamander was discovered here -- thus its name -- and the cave is the only place in the world where you're guaranteed to spot one.

If you are planning a visit, keep in mind that it can get a little cool in the cave, so you might want to bring a jacket. Also, wear comfortable shoes.

They call it an "up-close-and-personal" cave and they even invite guests to taste the natural spring water.

As you walk through the cave, you will see reflecting pools and Mastodon fossils that have been dated at more than 20,000 years old.

In one spot of the cave, there is a large concentration of fossils.

"Because of the unique shape of this rock, and the high concentration, scientists think the whole elephant is in there," said Collins.

The general tour ends in the Cathedral Room. The room boasts ceilings of 70 feet and a huge underground lake and it is all more than 130 feet underground.

For those that are truly seeking a thrill and do not mind some pretty cold water, you can jump in the lake and head down another 30 feet for what is known as the adventure tour.

Touring the cave can take anywhere from 45 minutes to about an hour. The park and caverns are perfect for a day trip or even an overnight camp out. You will just need to call ahead of camping reservations.
