SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Police and Fire Departments are set to hold a joint event focused on recruiting African Americans.

The event will allow those in attendance a chance to speak with current officers and firefighters.

"They are going to describe what brought them to the agency or the fire department. Their family life, what they like about it and how it's benefited them," said SAPD recruiter Javier Arguello.

The focus may be bringing in more African Americans, but both departments encourage anybody interested to show up.

"It's open to everybody, but due to the growth of the city, we do target different minorities," Arguello said.

The recruiting event will be on Saturday, July 19 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.

It will be held at the Carver Cultural center located on 226 N. Hackberry.
