Councilman Gallagher proposing changes to distracted driving ordinance

SAN ANTONIO – Distracted drivers can be found everywhere.

It's for that reason District 10 Councilman Mike Gallagher is proposing revision to the 2010's distracted driver ordinance.

The ordinance already in place prohibits the use of a hand-held mobile devices except for dialing telephone numbers or talking to another person while operating a vehicle but that could soon change.

"The main thing has to do with hand-held devices. In other words, if you're driving down the road, if you can talk to somebody without using hand-held devices you're fine, but it's those people that are holding something in their hands," said Gallagher.

The purpose of the revision is to cut down on distraction-related accidents.

Since the ordinance first began in 2010, there have been more than 1,900 accidents attributed to distracted driving, Of that total, six were fatal and 28 were incapacitating.

"I think a lot of people have driven up and down the road and how many times have you been distracted or you've seen somebody who's been distracted?" said Gallagher.

Gallagher said the provision will have to go before a safety committee before revisions can be made.
