CANYON LAKE, Texas – While the water in Canyon Lake may look inviting, it has been steadily dropping. Rocks once submerged are now out in the open, trees in the water that once only had their tops exposed, now show where the lake level was months ago.
Boater Andy McAnaul said he typically comes to Cayon Lake with his wife on weekdays when it's less crowded.
"Water temperature is beautiful, it's still got a lot of deep areas, but you got to know the lake well, to know where the shallow areas are at," said McAnaul.
As of Aug. 28, Canyon Lake is about 10 or 11 feet below full, which has caused several of its boat ramps to close. McAnaul said despite the way Canyon Lake may look, it's in a lot better shape than many of the lakes in the surrounding areas.
"So many ramps (are) closed and the lakes that surround the area, like Lake Travis, their ramps are closed and people are having to travel to this lake and it's really the only one in the area that's really open," said McAnaul.
McAnaul believes that due to the closure of some boat ramps, the ones that remain open will probably be busy Labor Day weekend.
"Coming up here on the weekdays, it's a lot of fun, you still got plenty of places to go, and it's not crowded. Weekends, it's a little bit more challenging, there's a lot more people trying to get into the few boat ramps that are still open," said McAnaul.
