Oil worker injured in rig fire dies

Worker identified as 50-year-old Roel Rodriguez

SAN ANTONIO – A rig worker burned in an oil well fire two weeks ago has died.

The Bexar County medical examiner's office confirmed the man died Saturday at San Antonio Military Medical Center. He was identified as 50-year-old Roel Rodriguez.

Rodriguez was among five workers burned when fire hit the drilling rig on the evening of Oct. 24. Medical helicopters flew all five victims to SAMMC for treatment.

That rig is about 20 miles east of Cotulla and 70 miles south of San Antonio in the heart of the Eagle Ford Shale oil boom operations.

The rig is owned by Pioneer Natural Resources.

The company says the fire sparked as workers conducted a procedure on the rig.

The names and conditions of the other burned workers are not known.
