Consumer Reports: Bike helmet poses safety risk

Bean bag chairs, stadium seats recalled

SAN ANTONIO – Consumer Reports is in the midst of testing bicycle helmets for Spring, but recently came across what it calls a serious problem with a helmet made by Cannondale.

Consumer Reports is rating the Cannondale Teramo helmet a "Don't Buy" after the chinstrap buckle broke. It happened on four of the five models Consumer Reports put through its safety test.

"All 13 of the other adult bike helmets we tested the same way passed our test," said Consumer Reports' John Galeotafiore. "But this helmet could pose a safety risk to bike riders. In an accident, the buckle could break and the helmet could come off leaving the cyclist unprotected."

Cannondale said it stands by its "independent third-party test results" in which it says no buckles broke. And,that its "helmets are tested in accordance with the required protocol and have passed all testing."

Consumer Reports does not know of any injuries with the Teramo helmet, and the company says it has not received any reports of injuries.

Consumer Reports recommends, if you own the Teramo helmet, stop using it. But by sure to always wear a helmet when riding a bike.

Comfort Research recalled nearly 125,000 vinyl bean bag chairs.

They have single zippers that can be opened by children who can then crawl inside and become trapped and suffocate or choke on the foam beads.

The chairs were sold between January 2010 and October 2013 at various retailers including Target, Walmart, Toys R Us, Kohl's and Burlington Coat Factory.

Consumers should check for zippers that can be opened and contact Comfort Research for instructions to disable the zipper.
