SAN ANTONIO – As the temperatures dropped Wednesday night many were bracing for the cooler weather, especially those who have no place to go.
And although the Salvation Army's Emergency Family Shelter in the 500 block of West Elmira Street has been at capacity for the past few days, Brad Mayhar, with the Salvation Army, said Wednesday that their doors are still open.
"We're prepared for overflow with the cold weather," said Mayhar. "What we're going to do is offer blankets and pillows for people just to get out of the element. Our goal is to not turn anyone away."
As of this week, many people have been turning to the Salvation Army for a warm place to stay.
One mother who did not want to be identified said she was glad the Salvation Army opened its doors to her and her daughter.
"I'm really thankful because without them we would be stuck pretty much out in the cold," she said. "Because we had nowhere else to go."
Right now the Salvation Army is accepting any donations, but what it needs the most is toiletries, hygiene items and blankets.
"Probably more than anything blankets, because our supply is kind of running low," said Mayhar. "We've had more cold weather nights here lately and we're expected to have some more."

Volunteers with the Salvation Army will be taking their canteen truck out to help people stuck in the cold Thursday.
They'll be handing out blankets, hot cocoa and tacos, but they also want encourage people to seek shelter.
