SAN ANTONIO – A teen identified as Jose Balderas, 17, is believed to be one of two people who were caught on camera, stealing a van that belonged to the San Antonio Independent School District from outside a school on the city's East Side.
An arrest affidavit stated that an SAISD employee had parked the van outside Poe Middle School around 9:30 p.m. Monday while he went inside to help other custodians who were cleaning the school. He told school district police that when he came out, the van was gone.
Police reviewed surveillance video from the school to see who stole the vehicle.
The affidavit stated they located the van the following day in an alley near the 1200 block of Pine Street.
An officer then began going door to door, trying to locate anyone who knew how the van ended up there.
During the search, he spotted Balderas outside a nearby home, wearing the same clothing as one of the people in the video, the affidavit stated.
Before he could speak with him, though, Balderas went inside the home and changed his clothes, the affidavit stated.
The officer was able to convince another man to get Balderas to come back outside, where he was questioned by the officer about the theft.
Balderas was arrested and charged with theft on Wednesday.
Police said the officer also found another person at the home who appeared to be the second suspect in the surveillance video, the affidavit stated.
Although they also obtained a warrant for his arrest, it does not appear he has been charged yet.
