SAN ANTONIO – KSAT got a behind-the-scenes peek at how San Antonio zookeepers built and delivered a handmade birthday cake to two birthday bears on Friday.
"The cake itself is made up of omnivore chow, which is a chow that they normally eat on a day-to-day basis, crushed up and mixed together with some gelatin, honey, peanut butter, all squished together and shaped into a cake to make it more exciting for us to watch," said San Antonio Zoo Training and Enrichment specialist Christina Burges.
The San Antonio Zoo Nutrition Center team invited a whole bunch of people to the party. A crowd watched as the bears, Kashka and Molly, celebrated their 10th birthdays by tearing up their presents, and digging into their cake.
Gary, a 5-year-old visitor to the zoo, said he thought the cake looked yummy.
"I feel like I want to jump over the fence and eat it!" Gary laughed.
Then, after a quick glance at the bears, he decided to watch from a distance.
"They look big," he said.
It was a good idea, considering the fact that the 300-pound black bears still don't share so well, especially when it comes to birthday cake.
Saturday is Bubba the Komodo dragon's birthday, and zookeepers will be making him a cake too. The celebration starts at 1:30 p.m.
