Council approves new fleet vehicles for SAPD

City will spend $6M on patrol units, aggressive driving units, motorcycles

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio City Council on Thursday approved the purchase of more than 200 new vehicles for the San Antonio Police Department.

The city will spend approximately $6 million on patrol units, aggressive driving units and motorcycles for the fleet.

Police Chief Anthony Trevino said the department's patrol units put on a lot of miles.

"We routinely go through about 20 vehicles per month that mile out," he said. "We have to make sure that we have that flow of vehicles that we can bring back into the fleet so that way we can turn those vehicles around as quickly as possible to make sure we have the adequate number of for officers to use for patrol operations."

The first set of the new vehicles should arrive in July.
