Grandmother, school staff help returning airman surprise son

Green Valley second-grader finds true magic at 'Majik Theatre'

SAN ANTONIO – Amari Davis, a second-grader at Green Valley Elementary School, thought he was joining his classmates Thursday morning on a field trip to the Majik Theatre to see a show called "The Magic Tree House: A Night in New Orleans."

Theater founder Richard Rosen asked Amari to join him on stage to help introduce a special guest. That is when the morning turned truly magic.

"Turn around," Rosen told the youngster.

He turned and saw his mother, U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Lorelle Farrell, running toward him.

"Mommy, Mommy!" Amari shouted as he dashed into his mother's arms.

"I missed you so much ... you got big," Farrell said with tears streaming down her cheeks.

Farrell said that the homecoming made up for her six-month deployment to Afghanistan that at times was difficult.

"I was gone during Thanksgiving and Christmas –- major holidays," she said. "It got rough."

The remainder of the day was anything but rough for the two. Their only plans were to enjoy the show and each other's company.
