SAN ANTONIO – Jody Hernandez, an East Bexar County woman allegedly was shot and killed by her husband in what he claims was a "mercy killing," may have previously detailed her illnesses on an Internet web page.
The 31-year-old was found dead of a gunshot wound Saturday in her home in the 4700 block of Dapple Drive. An arrest warrant affidavit stated that she was lying on a bed in the living room with a handgun on her chest.
When deputies arrived, her husband, Daniel Hernandez, 33, walked out of the home with his hands up, telling them, "She asked me to do it, sir. I shot her," the affidavit stated.
The Bexar County Sheriff's Office later released information saying that Daniel Hernandez told investigators his wife was in pain from Crohn's disease but too afraid to kill herself.
KSAT 12 News has discovered an Internet web page that appears to support at least part of his claim.
The page, on a crowdfunding site called giveforward.com, was set up by Jody Hernandez about a year ago. It stated that she suffers from a long list of health problems, including Crohn's disease.
Crowdfunding sites are used by people who appeal to others for financial assistance. In this case, Jody Hernandez said she wanted help with money for medical costs as well as a trip to "handle family issues in her native California."
The date on the page shows that it was discontinued in May 2014, and it does not appear that any money was contributed to the fund.
On Monday morning, the sheriff's office confirmed that Daniel Hernandez is in the U. S. Army, stationed at Ft. Sam Houston.
According to a military representative, he has been working as a licensed vocational nurse at San Antonio Military Medical Center since 2011. He also served at least one tour in Iraq.
When asked for comment on the case, Lindan Moya, the acting director of communications for the Southern Regional Medical Command, issued a written statement.
"Our hearts and prayers go out to the Hernandez family. We are fully cooperating with the Bexar County Sheriff's department with respect to its investigation. Brooke Army Medical Center does not discuss criminal matters under investigation."
Daniel Hernandez was booked into the Bexar County jail Saturday on a charge of murder.
As of Monday morning, he remained in custody, awaiting arraignment with a bond set at $75,000.
