'Discover the Ice Age' makes Witte Museum debut

Exhibit runs May 23-Sept. 7

SAN ANTONIO – "Discover the Ice Age" makes its U.S. debut in San Antonio, and will allow Witte Museum-goers the chance to get an up-close look at animals that were around during the Ice Age.

"We are so thrilled to have the exhibition. These are life-size, animatronic, fully-haired, hairy, Ice Age mammals," said Witte Museum President Marise McDermott.

The new exhibit features all stages of the Ice Age, but what most may not know is the relation this time period has to Texas.

Some 2.5 million years ago, animals like the so-called Terror Bird and mammoths roamed the Lone Star State.

"Here it may not be cold with ice, but we definitely got a huge variety of animals that would have been (in the area) as the ice sheets moved back and forth," said museum curator Dr. Thomas Adams.

"Discover the Ice Age" will open up Saturday and remain open through Sept. 7.
