Medina Lake Park reopens after more than 2 years

Recent rains fill lake in time for summer

MEDINA LAKE, Texas – The Medina Lake Park has been closed for the past 2 1/2 years, but with the recent rains, it once again is ready for fun-seekers.

"(I am) very happy to have water back," Bandera County Precinct 2 Commissioner Bobby Harris said. "It is one of the prettiest lakes in Texas when it has water in it, so we are back on our way to being one of the prettiest lakes."

The park is in Harris' precinct, so he spent the last couple of weeks getting ready to open it up.

Some teenagers recently done with the school year couldn't wait for the weekend and said they were ready to hit the water.

"It looks a lot better now. Over the last couple of years it's been dried up but it's starting to look like it should," Emily Hawley said.

Phil and Samantha Kellogg live at the lake and were the first ones to launch their boat when the park opened Friday. It was a day they have been waiting for.

"He (Phil) just kept saying, 'It's going to take a hurricane, it's going to take a hurricane or something to fill it up,'" Samantha Kellogg said. "We got enough rain, like it was a hurricane."

Opening the park will be good for the county in several ways, especially a boost to the economy in the area of the park.

"The people are happy, I'm happy, the county is happy. We are excited for a big summer up here," Harris said.
