SAN MARCOS, Texas – The city of San Marcos and its residents continue to band together to help those affected by the deadly flooding over Memorial Day weekend.
Many buildings and homes were damaged or destroyed, leaving a lot of people displaced.
The Uptown Square Apartments opened its doors to some of those who lost everything. Twenty units were made available, rent free, for those who needed it most.
"Anyone affected directly by the flood, those who have lost their homes and those who really (are) just in desperate need of somewhere to stay (were invited to stay at the apartments)," said Uptown Square project assistant Ory Kalenkosky.
Several charities helped the complex choose residents who needed a place to live.
Cleanup is still taking place in Hays County, and residents continue to step up to help their own.
Social worker David Ross has lived in San Marcos for 20 years. He said he has donated items to those in need and has been on-call in the continued relief efforts.
The community will continue to give back Sunday at the Band Together Texas benefit concert.
Five bands, including Blue October and Ray Wylie Hubbard, will be performing in San Marcos at The Marc concert venue.
All proceeds will go directly to flood victims.
