Heavy rains, flooding strike parts of San Antonio, South Texas

SAN ANTONIO – Heavy rainfall continues in areas of South Texas this evening, especially north of San Antonio, says KSAT Meteorologist Katie Vossler.

Most of the showers and storms will begin to taper off into the evening, but more rain is expected over the next few days.

Moisture continues to increase and an unstable atmosphere is now in place over the region, keeping chances for scattered showers and storms in the forecast through the early work week. Anything that develops has the potential to cause flash flooding, with heavy downpours possible.

The National Hurricane Center is also tracking a developing tropical system deep in the Gulf of Mexico. This disturbance has a likely chance of turning into an organized tropical depression within the next 48 hours.

Computer models are predicting that the system will then make its way toward the Texas coast and will cause likely chances for widespread heavy rainfall for parts of the state midweek.

Heavy rains, flooding washes through San Antonio

The wave of rain and flooding washed through some areas of San Antonio Sunday afternoon.

Some neighborhoods on the Northwest, Southeast and West sides appeared to be among the hardest hit by fast flooding.

Fire rescue crews hurried to the streets around St. Cloud and Donaldson as rising floodwaters trapped some people and cars. Fire and police rushed to get barricades up and keep people from heading into flooded areas. The area on and around Donaldson flooded fast, and police and fire put barricades there.

Most flooding was brief, and waters went down as fast as they'd come up.

At Seco Tierra and Puente, on the southeast side, stopped-up drains caused knee-deep water to fill the street. Some neighbors unstopped the drains, and the water quickly went away.

CPS Energy's power outage map indicates there are spots across the city without power, including a swath covering the Southeast Side with as many as 500 people without power as of 4:30 p.m.
